Supreme Court decides to take suo motu suo motu cognizance of Kolkata woman trainee doctor murder case.

A second-year postgraduate trainee doctor was allegedly raped and murdered while on duty at RG Ghar Government Hospital in Kolkata, West Bengal on August 8, 2024. Based on the police investigation, one Sanjay Rai was arrested. The brutal rape and murder of a trainee doctor has sparked outrage across the country.

At the same time, the protest of medical students has intensified across the country condemning the murder of the medical student. The doctors have been protesting for the ninth day demanding justice for the incident. Medical services in government hospitals have been severely affected due to the doctors’ strike. Medical services in the ICU and OPD have been severely affected. Meanwhile, a petition was filed in the Calcutta High Court seeking transfer of the case to the CBI. Following this, the High Court had transferred the case to the CBI.

Following this, a 25-member CBI team started investigating the case. As part of this, CBI officials conducted an inquiry at the hospital where the woman trainee doctor was murdered. The CBI officials collected clues from the spot where the incident took place. The team also includes a team of specialist doctors and a special forensic team.

Meanwhile, the state police handed over Sanjay Rai, who was already arrested in the case, to the CBI. In this situation, the Supreme Court has decided to take suo motu cognizance of the sexual assault and murder of a female trainee doctor. A bench comprising Chief Justice Chandra Sood and Justice J P Nadda will hear the matter. A bench of Justices Pardiwala and Manoj Mishra will hear the matter the day after tomorrow (20.08.2024).
