Doctors strike in Erode
The Indian Medical Association (IMA) has called for a nationwide strike to protest against the murder of a woman doctor in Kolkata. The protest began at 6 am on Saturday and will continue till 6 am on Sunday (August 18).
More than 1,500 doctors working in 950 hospitals in Erode district, including doctors who are members of the Indian Medical Association, took part in the strike. Except for the emergency department, no other unit is functioning due to the 24-hour strike.
The doctors also staged a protest in front of the IMA auditorium in Sampath Nagar in Erode condemning the murder of the woman doctor. The protest was led by Saravanan, president of the Erode branch of the Indian Medical Association. Former president Senthilvel and secretary Aravind were in the forefront. The doctors who participated in the protest raised slogans about the demands.
Speaking to reporters, Erode branch president Saravanan demanded an impartial probe into the murder of a woman doctor in Kolkata and punished the culprits. The culprits who damaged the medical college should be arrested immediately. The Central Health Protection Act should be passed. Hospitals across the country should be declared a safety net.
Hospitals should install CCTV cameras everywhere. Adequate security personnel should be appointed in medical colleges. Women doctors should be given protection if they work at night. “If the family of the victim doctor does not get justice, our next phase of our struggle will be intensified,” he said.
