The criminal laws enacted by the central government before the Lok Sabha elections have been criticized among lawyers. The Bar Association has also held some protests for the same. What is wrong with this law? DMK organizing secretary R S Bharathi has filed a petition in the Madras High Court alleging that the Act creates confusion.
The Madras High Court has ordered the Central Government to explain within a period of time. Such a party has interpreted this law to the Central Government! People should have been clarified. Or at least explain it in court. That was the biggest mistake they made.
The Bar Association has decided to hold a massive protest against the central government in Delhi on July 29 in this regard. Therefore, it is a politics of the opposition parties that can tarnish the BJP’s rule. So there won’t be much of a lot of work that people will have to do in court in this law. The accused concerned may not have to go to court much. Everything is digitized and judges can also contact and interrogate the person concerned through a conference.
Hearings can also be conducted through video conferencing. There is no need for people to stand at the station with folded hands all day. Not only that, but for crimes committed at the relevant place, the public can register crimes online. One of the biggest battle flags of lawyers through this law is that it affects their legal profession. Their income depends on this.
People can directly conduct their own case. If such laws are passed, which lawyers will accept this? Lawyers with a conscience agree. But in Tamil Nadu, more than 75 per cent of Katta panchayat lawyers are there. If they go and stand at the police station and run these panchayats with the police, both of them will have an income.
If the central government puts an end to this, how will they accept it? Lawyers across the states have protested against the issue. It is only conscientious lawyers who have supported it. It is very limited. How is the central government going to handle this agitation in this situation? That’s the biggest challenge.
